Our mission is to help businesses, governments, and service providers with clear explanations, useful tools, and easy-to-understand comparisons. Countries with their own Peppol authority, like the Netherlands, are allowed, within agreed frameworks, to set additional rules. For example, in the Netherlands, all Peppol service providers must have an ISO27001 certification or equivalent. Such requirements ensure that Peppol e-invoicing is handled reliably and securely.

Peppol is a network for digital exchange
The Peppol network is an international infrastructure for securely exchanging business documents, such as invoices and orders. You can think of it as a digital postal network specifically designed for businesses, governments, and institutions.

Peppol operates according to the so-called 4-corner model:

  • Sender – for example, an accounting package, ERP system, or e-invoicing portal.

  • Peppol Service Provider of the sender – this provider connects to the network.

  • Peppol Service Provider of the recipient – this provider receives the document on behalf of the customer.

  • Recipient – for example, a company, government, or healthcare institution.

Since both the sender and recipient choose their own service provider, an open network is created where you are not dependent on a single central party. This promotes innovation and competition in the world of Peppol e-invoicing.

A central search function (the SML) and distributed address books (the SMPs) ensure that each invoice knows exactly where to go. Smart, secure, and scalable.

Peppol is a set of international standards
In addition to the organization and the network, Peppol is also the name of the document standards used via the network. These standards are called Peppol BIS (Business Interoperability Specifications). They ensure that invoices, orders, and other messages are uniformly structured.

The Peppol BIS for e-invoicing is the most widely used standard within the network worldwide. It doesn’t matter which accounting package you use: if it supports Peppol BIS, your e-invoice can always be delivered to the recipient – regardless of their system or location.
